We who are comfortable need to look poverty in the face and realize that there are people in the world who are struggling, who need our prayers and who need to know that they are cared for by others in the community.     This is an invitation to partake of this inspiring ministry. Volunteers are asked to arrive by 5:00 p.m.

United Thank Offering (UTO) -- Spring Ingathering on Sunday, May 13
by LouAnn Crass
Grateful hearts are the reason the United Thank Offering (UTO) is able to continue to award grants which are gifts of love, and which change lives. They are also the reason the United Thank Offering is a vital mission arm of the Episcopal Church.  Have you ever thought about the reward you receive by taking time each day to thank God in prayer for your received blessings (a healthy body, meeting a new person, making a score in a game, a call from a close friend, a good grade on the spelling test, beautiful weather, a safe journey, a warm home, food to eat and family to share it, etc., etc.)? Naming your many blessings as a family helps you to feel God’s presence in your lives and gives you positive things to talk about at the dinner table. Thank God for his presence in our lives. Pick up a Blue Box (in your pew or at the communication center) and join members of St. David’s in this mission.
“God gave you the gift of 86,000 seconds today—have you used one to say, “thank you?”

PARISH HEALTH MEETING: Looking at our Finances and Spiritual Well Being
Tuesday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m.

All people of St. David’s are strongly urged to attend a meeting scheduled by the vestry on Tuesday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting has a two-fold purpose -- first, to update the congregation on where we are financially; and second, to complete a survey pertaining to the spiritual and church life of St. David’s.

The purpose of this survey is to seek help from the St. David’s family in assessing the ability of our church to meet your spiritual and church life needs. As we look to the future and the direction of St. David’s, we would like to understand how you perceive and experience church life and the programs currently in place. Our goal is that every voice will be heard. If you are not able to take the survey on May 15, surveys will be available for pick up on Sunday, May 20 and May 27 or contact the church office. All surveys must be returned by Sunday, June 3. Results of the survey will be made available to the parish. We urge all who attend St. David’s to take part in this important project.

Nature Outing: May 20 -- Painted Rocks to Boat Launch
by Pete Wyman
All ages are welcome on our next nature outing along the Little Spokane River on Sunday, May 20 after the second service. We will begin our walk at the Painted Rocks, and go  through to where the Little Spokane empties into the Spokane River. Be prepared to be amazed by the nature and of course, the Great Blue Heron that nests along the river. It is a 1½ mile (or less)  hike over flat terrain (any flat-heeled shoe should be appropriate) which should not take more than two hours. You will not have to return by foot. We can either eat lunch down by the river, or at my house on Dartford Creek about two miles farther north.   You can pick up something on the way or share soup and burgers at my house.  We will carpool because this is state land needing a state Discovery Pass to park. If someone else besides myself has a pass, please let me know. If you have any questions, feel free to pick up an information sheet at the Communications Center or call me.

Cursillo Ultreya/group reunion at Holy Trinity

April 24th  vestry meeting highlights
by Nadine Grady
At last month’s meeting the vestry approved the establishment of a committee to consider developing a survey of the congregation. The survey’s goal is to help us understand how we can encourage and support the spiritual needs and other church life needs of our parish family. Since then, the committee has been formed (Sally Atkins, Muriel Foster, Marjorie Heywood, and Pat Kowal, working with the Senior and Junior Wardens, Steve Kellen and Judith Scarborough). They presented a draft survey at this meeting. Lengthy discussion followed, particularly as to whether it would produce the kind of information needed to guide future decisions. Many good suggestions were made. A motion was passed to use the survey in an amended form.

Short financial notes: (1) The “Feast for All the People” fundraiser netted $1,400 for the operating fund. Thanks to Judith Scarborough and Ashley Steinhart for their work putting it together! (2) A motion was passed approving the sale of the four cemetery plots that were donated to St. David’s. Net proceeds to the operating fund will be $3,990 when the sale is completed.

The second major topic was hearing recommendations from the Financial Task Force. (At the annual meeting in January, the parish directed the Task Force to evaluate the church finances and make recommendations to the vestry in April.) Rich Basta presented a comparison of the first quarter’s finances to the budget. Due to increased pledges, increased unpledged giving, the successful fundraiser, and some expenses coming in lower than expected, at the end of March, we were doing nearly $11,000 better than projected. However, that’s not enough to cover the projected $49,000 deficit for the year. The Task Force recommended a meeting to share information with our parish family and emphasized the need for committed giving at a level that will support the budget. As Senior Warden Steve Kellen put it, “We’re surviving, but we’re surviving in crisis mode. We can’t go on operating long term that way. It’s up to us – we all need to step up and support our church.” The meeting is scheduled for the evening of May 15 at 7:00 p.m. and will include opportunity to discuss and complete the survey in small groups.

Update on A Feast for all the People
by Judith Scarborough, Junior Warden
We would like to thank all who helped to make the Feast a wonderful and successful evening.  $1,400 was raised for the good works of St. David’s.

All who attended enjoyed the entertainment, local talent all, with the exception of an itinerant juggler, who played with knives and fire for his supper. The dancers, musicians, sword-fighters, bard and all were excellent diversions. The meal (all of which could be consumed without using utensils, though few tried) was well prepared, thanks in large part to Steve Lagana and Rich Basta, with Marjorie Heywood preparing a vegetarian dish.

The Market Square offered a unique collection of items for purchase, and the raffle and silent auction were successful as well. Thanks to all who donated of their time, talent, and treasures to help make this dinner a memorable event. Indeed, a merry time was had by all!

ERD NetsforLife Update
by The Rev. Char Mills
Thank you to all who donated to NetsforLife. We raised $1,315.61! The even better news is that we are eligible to apply for a Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) matching grant from the Diocese for $500, and the NetsforLife Inspiration Fund is going to match our $1,315.61 dollar for dollar. Potentially, we will donate $3,131.22 which is awesome. That adds up to over 260 nets and many, many lives saved. Thank you again.

Spring clean-up day update
by Ashley Steinhart, Building & Grounds Vestry Liaison
Thanks and appreciation to all who came to make our spring clean-up day a success! About 20 people, representing all ages, turned out with rakes and smiles to take care of the pine needles, leaves and other detritus of winter. With so many hands making light work, we were done in a short two hours! Special thanks to Steve Lagana for bringing his trailer and hauling off the waste material. Extra kudos to our guttersnipes, Gary Atkins, Steve Lagana and Bob Gronberg. (Cleaning our gutters is a difficult job they do every year that is nearly invisible to most of us.)

Our landscape and grounds gurus have noted that there are a number of ongoing “chores,” like spraying weeds, that could use extra hands. If you hear the Spirit calling you to join in the crusade against weeds, please let me know by email or phone.

Needlecrafters report
by Holly Chick, Coordinator
We give thanks to Mother Elaine who blessed the remaining prayer shawls that have been made on Sunday, April 22 at both services. We now have a fair amount of prayer shawls available. If you want to request one to be given to someone, please do that through the office and Mother Elaine.

Our next meeting is Monday, May 7 at 10:00 a.m. in Lower Siberia. We will have a short business meeting and then start assembling quilts for the Vanessa Behan Crisis Center. We will be cutting out squares, possibly ironing on some appliques, choosing which fabrics go together, and many other aspects of this project. If you have any fabrics, specifically cotton fabric, and would like to donate some, it will be greatly appreciated. All are welcome to come and help with this project, or learn to knit or crochet.

St. Martha's Guild report
by Jean Rose
At our April 9 meeting we finalized plans for the Spaghetti/Bunko event we hosted on Friday, April 27. We also had a great lunch where the main course was “Stone Soup.”  Each member contributed an ingredient for the soup and it was delicious. Jeanne Mitchell read us a story about the origin of “Stone Soup.”   We also had a demonstration on making a stone meditation labyrinth and now have the instructions and materials to make one for our use at home.  Our next meeting will be at 12 noon on Monday, May 14. All women are welcome to join us.

Hope House update
by Marcia O’Leary
St. David’s continues to collect clothing and household items for the women at Hope House, the downtown evening shelter for women living on the street. Most anything is useable including men's clothing which some women wear. A marked collection basket is located in the narthex.

Columbarium update
by Marcia O’Leary, Coordinator
If you are interested in making your final destination decisions, individual niches are still available in our attractive and peaceful Memorial Garden & Columbarium, located on the Monroe Street side of our church building. A six member committee maintains the shady site. The expense for an individual niche continues to be $400 per person which includes opening, closing and an engraved nameplate. Contact Marcia O'Leary for information.
